July 14, 2026: Lifeline Children’s Services applauds the Trump administration’s decision to rescind the 2024 designated placement rule, which required federal agencies to ensure designated placements that affirm a child’s self-identified gender identity or sexual orientation.
Across the country, child welfare systems continue to face significant shortages of foster families. While the rule had already been vacated by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Lifeline is grateful for this final removal of unnecessary barriers, allowing more families to answer the call to care for children in need.
“Children in foster care have often experienced profound trauma, loss, and instability,” said Herbie Newell, president and executive director of Lifeline. “Our responsibility is to surround them with families who will provide safety, compassion, and hope. We are grateful for this step toward strengthening the foster care system and ensuring faith-based foster families can continue serving children according to their deeply held convictions.”
