As I write this, a plane is taking off from Detroit carrying 11 children and three adults on the last few hours of their journey from Chongqing, China to Birmingham, Alabama.
As we anxiously await the arrival of our guests, I doubt they know what it has taken to get them here.
They probably don’t know that 14 generous strangers have sacrificially donated to purchase plane tickets. I bet they don’t know that we have contacted Chinese authorities, US senators, and immigration offices to make travel arrangements. They surely don’t know that over the next 10 days over 200 people have committed to serve meals, plan activities, lead craft times, chaperone field trips, clean and do laundry- all to create a safe, fun camp. More than anything, I know they can’t imagine the time spent in prayer or the love and care that has gone into planning for their stay in Birmingham. They don’t yet know the friendly faces, loving arms, and open hearts they will soon be met with.
But soon they will know! Tomorrow Charlotte, Victoria, Rachel, Fran, Wyatt, Ethan, Samuel, Randal, Carson, Jimmy, and Harrison will know they are welcomed, that they are special, and that they are loved! And I can’t wait to see that knowledge grow over these next two weeks!
Our campers arrived last night at 10 pm!! We were excited to welcome them to Birmingham and to Kids Camp! We went straight to camp, had a delicious dinner of Chinese food and headed for bed. Between all of the excitement, jet lag, and a major difference in time zones- there was not much sleep for anyone! This morning we have enjoyed playing and trying to stay dry. Everyone is a little sleepy but happy! This morning our campers are getting just a taste of the excitement and fun waiting for them!
